Geomembranes are polymer membranes that are produced in rolls of various thicknesses of 0.3 to 5 mm and are marketed. Geomembranes have a different performance in terms of their polymer profiles and physical properties. The geomembrane forming polymers are divided into four general categories:

- Polyethylene (PE): Their main application is in agricultural ponds and landfills, and are generally divided into three categories: LDPE, HDPE and VLDPE

- PVC: Due to the very good index of softness and puncture resistance, PVC is the most suitable geomembrane for sealing the basements.

- Polypropylene (PP): It has the technical specifications for sealing the basements, but because of its high cost, it is used in specific projects.

- EPDM: The main use of this kind of materials is the insoles of shoes, washers and tires. The excellent resistance of this polymer to erosion has led to the use of this product in specific projects.
